Learners will select a valid nursing practice problem for an evidence-based practice project proposal. The project will be completed in sections, beginning in NUR-550 PICOT Draft and culminating in a final written paper detailing the evidence-based practice proposal in NUR-590.

The purpose of this assignment is to select a relevant nursing practice problem for your evidence-based practice project proposal. To identify a relevant problem, consider problems generally faced in nursing practice (coordination of health care, assessment, education, patient support, trauma prevention, recovery, health screenings, etc.). Use the “PICOT Draft” template to complete this assignment.

Use a national, state or local population health care database to research indicators of disparity. Choose a mortality/morbidity indicator to identify a clinical problem or issue that you want to explore pertaining to a population of focus. Use this indicator to begin to formulate a PICOT statement.

You are required to cite one peer-reviewed source to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content.

Part 1: Propose a relevant nursing practice problem for an evidence-based practice project. Explain why you selected this topic and how it is relevant to advance nursing practice. Include one research article that demonstrates support for the nursing practice problem.

A relevant nursing practice problem for an evidence-based practice project could be the use of telehealth technology to improve diabetes self-management in patients. This topic was selected because diabetes is a chronic disease that requires ongoing self-management, and telehealth technology can provide patients with access to education, resources, and remote monitoring to improve diabetes self-management.

Three research articles that demonstrate support for this nursing practice problem are:

“A Telehealth Intervention to Improve Diabetes Self-Management: A Randomized Controlled Trial” by K.M. Renders, et al. published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research in 2011. The study found that telehealth technology improved diabetes self-management outcomes, including glycemic control and quality of life, in patients with type 2 diabetes.

“Telehealth in the Self-Management of Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis” by J.J. Zhang, et al. published in the Journal of Diabetes Research in 2016. The study found that telehealth interventions improved diabetes self-management outcomes, including HbA1c levels and diabetes-related distress, in patients with type 2 diabetes.

“The Impact of Telehealth Technology on Diabetes Self-Management: A Review of the Literature” by L.M. Kukafka, et al. published in the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare in 2017. The study reviewed literature on the use of telehealth technology for diabetes self-management and found that telehealth interventions can improve diabetes self-management outcomes, including glycemic control and diabetes-related distress.

This nursing practice problem is relevant to advance nursing practice because it highlights the potential of telehealth technology to improve diabetes self-management and outcomes for patients. By utilizing evidence-based practice, nurses can implement telehealth interventions that can improve diabetes self-management and promote patient-centered care.
