Module 1 – Case LEADERSHIP IN HEALTH EDUCATION AND SECURING

Module 1 – Case LEADERSHIP IN HEALTH EDUCATION AND SECURING FUNDING FOR HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS Assignment Overview Health educators often serve as directors or coordinators of the health education projects or programs. If these projects/programs are to be successful, they must know how to work effectively as leaders of the teams they supervise. To this end, this module focuses on styles of leadership and some of the duties they perform. As the program director at a local community based organization you have conducted a needs assessment and determine that members of your service population are increasingly at risk for diabetes. Your executive director has asked that you develop an intervention to address this problem but that you also identify funding agencies that award grants in support of diabetes prevention programs Case Assignment There are two parts to this assignment both have multiple requirements. Part I: After reading Community Tool Box Chapter 13, Section 3 (i.e., Styles of Leadership), write an essay in which you reflect upon your own leadership style. Please ensure that your paper addresses the following specific questions: Of the styles presented-autocratic, managerial, demographic, and collaborative-which best characterizes you? Why? Which style(s) do you believe to be most effective for health educators? Why? Which do you think are least effective? Again, please explain. NOTE: Please ensure that you support your analysis with evidence from background readings and additional scholarly sources. Part II: Read Chapter 42, Sections 4-5 of the Community Tool Box (i.e., Applying for Grant: The General Approach and Writing a Grant) and, after doing so, write a three-page paper in which you describe the steps you will take to secure funding for your diabetes prevention program. Your paper should clearly delineate: Two potential funding sources (these can be foundations, the government, or private businesses/corporations) Eligibility requirements for grants from these agencies/organizations and the extent to which your program and organization satisfy these The funding mechanism, i.e., Call for Proposal (CFP), Request for Proposals (RFP), Request for Applications (RFA), Program Announcement, etc. The timeline for submission and review of your grant proposal NOTE: For clarification, you are not being asked to develop an intervention for this assignment; you are however being asked to explore funding possibilities for such. Length for Part 1 should be 2-3 pages. Length for Part 2 should be 3-pages.  Assignment Expectations Assessment and Grading: Your paper will be assessed based on the performance assessment rubric that is linked within the course. Review it before you begin working on the assignment. The following guidance appears only in Module 1, but it applies to the assignments throughout the course: File format:   Your work should be prepared using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Excel depending upon the assignment instructions. For assignments requiring video or voice recordings, use media formats that are supported by MyTLC Courses as noted in our Trident Support page.  In-text citations and references: Be sure that all information and ideas in your papers are supported by in-text citations and corresponding references at the end of the paper.  Scholarly sources:   At least three scholarly sources should be included in your paper. Online sources must be limited to credible professional and scholarly publications such as peer-reviewed journal articles, e-books, or specific webpages on websites from a university, government, or nonprofit organization (these have extensions .edu, .gov, or .org). Presenting consumer sources such as e-magazines, newspapers, Wikipedia, WebMD, or other commercial websites (these have extensions .com) as references is not appropriate.  Scholarly writing:   Use an academic paper format, not an essay based on your opinions or experience. Avoid using the first person in writing. Synthesize what you learned from the sources you read; write papers in your own words; and cite sources within the text, as well as include a properly formatted reference list.  Use of direct quotes: Use of direct quotes should be avoided. Only use direct quotes when preserving the exact words of an author is necessary. In the rare instance that directly quoted material is used, it must be properly cited (with quotation marks and page numbers in the in-text citation); quotes should not exceed 5-10% of the total paper content.  The Writing Style Guide that is linked on the TLC Portal homepage under My Resources will help clarify expectations.
